The first SEFS Seminar of the spring quarter 2021 will be presented by Ruth DeFries, a professor of ecology and sustainable development at Columbia University in New York.

DeFries will present “Lessons from Nature for an Uncertain Future” at 3:30 p.m. Pacific Time on Wednesday, April 7 via Zoom: https://washington.zoom.us/s/91222833965. The discussion is open to anyone interested in attending. A usual Q&A session will be held immediately after the presentation. Full meeting information can be found at the bottom of this news item.

Here’s an abstract for the presentation:

“In the last year, the covid pandemic, historic fires, and extreme climate events have exposed humanity’s inabilities to effectively manage shocks. Innovations that make society more resilient to shocks is a key aspect of sustainability. Nature has persisted through unpredictable disease, asteroids, and extinctions and survived for billions of years. These strategies and their lessons for human societies, highlighted in the book ‘What WouldNature Do?”, include: investments in diversity; redundancy in civilization’s transport and trade networks; bottom up decisions rather than top-down impositons from authorities; and self-regulating feedbacks that stem cascading failures. These strategies run counter to the efficiency paradigm that dominates development decisions, but they could help prepare society for an uncertain world.”
