Northwest Youth Corps/Idaho Conservation Corps is wrapping up another successful year of job-training programs for our members! We could not have done it without your help and support. The NYC/ICC Community Engagement team is incredibly grateful to our dedicated recruitment partners for your work in furthering our reach to youth and young adults across the Pacific Northwest.

This year NYC has delivered our mission in the most unforgiving environment in our 36 year history. An international pandemic and unprecedented wildfires made the 2020 field season one of the most challenging yet. With the safety procedures implemented by our staff, our young people were still able to learn, grow, and experience success. The students, participants, interns, and leaders that we served found a place to thrive during this unprecedented time. Some of our highlights of this year include:

  • Operating 36 youth crews that resulted in:
    • 125 miles of trail maintained
    • 125 acres of fuels reduction
    • 450 acres of invasive species removal
  • 283 youth (ages 15-19) and 115 Young Adults (ages 19+) members served in Oregon, Washington and Idaho
  • 95 field leaders trained and served
  • Wildfire restoration efforts in response to the Holiday Farm Fire – Northwest Youth Corps makes the front page for the Wildfire efforts in the McKenzie River Valley.
  • Check out the radio interview about our rainbow crew that occurred in July!
  • Our Tribal Stewards Program was highlighted in the Society of American Foresters newsletter!

As we look to the 2021 season, we will be continuing our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts by continuing to expand our opportunities. We are excited to announce that our Tribal Stewards program will be broadening its scope while connecting youth to ancestral trails. We have also welcomed Gregory Schmidt, American Sign Language Inclusion Coordinator to our team to further our programming for the deaf and hard of hearing community. Meanwhile, our Rainbow crews will continue to develop after another successful season.

These numbers and highlights would not have been possible without our network of recruitment partners. We are greatly appreciative of your partnership in connecting youth and young adults to our programs. As always, please reach out to learn more or to schedule a presentation. We are looking forward to another great year in 2021! Happy New Year!
