SEFS Students Make Meal for 120+ in Homeless Community
Just before the end of the winter 2019 quarter, a group of School of Environmental and Forest Sciences students prepared and served more than 120 burritos for the residents of Tent City 3, a community of men and women who are homeless and living under shelters managed by Seattle Housing and Resource Effort and the Women’s Equality and Enhancement League.
Tent Cities unique, democratically-organized communities whose strict codes of conduct include sobriety and nonviolence. They offer a housing options for folks the traditional shelter model does not serve, which includes couples, families and people with pets.
For weeks before, the students collected donations from the SEFS community, which were used to cover the entire cost of the meal for Tent City 3 residents. Catherine Kuhn, SEFS Ph.D. student and one of the organizers of the effort, thanked all of those who donated their time and funds.
“As a result of these efforts,” said Catherine Kuhn, SEFS Ph.D. student, said, “we were able to deliver a full, hot meal to the very grateful residents of Tent City 3 on Friday, March 13th, which included folks returning home between work shifts, toddlers with their parents, school-aged youth and two very welcoming pups.”
