Students studying Environmental Science and Resource Management (ESRM) learn about natural and human-dominated landscapes and how to apply this knowledge to real-world problems. Sustainable Bioresource Systems Engineering (SBSE) students apply chemical sciences and engineering to manufacturing fiber product, fuels and chemicals from biomass resources. Special degree focus areas are available for ESRM students and degree minors are available in ecological restoration and ESRM.

Our graduate degrees offer a number of different paths that prepare students for careers from academia to public agencies, the private sector to nonprofit organizations. There are two traditional degrees and two non-thesis degrees. We also partner with other programs within the university to offer two concurrent degrees.
Graduate Degrees
Our faculty use engineering and natural, wildlife and social science in their work, which is aimed at developing renewable forest products and stewarding forest and landscape ecosystems for a range of functions and services, and understanding the social, economic and environmental consequences of stewardship and production choices.
This October the U.S. Green Building Council announced that the renovation of Anderson Hall, home to the School of Environmental and Forest Sciences at the University of Washington, achieved LEED Gold certification.

Near the completion of Anderson Hall’s landscape design we met up with SiteWorkshop Landscape Architect Cyrus Deloye who received his MLA right here at the University of Washington. Cyrus worked on Anderson Hall’s native and locally influenced meadow design and shared some of the firm’s inspiration behind design decisions and some of the challenges they faced in designing a landscape that would support the growth of native plants while suppressing non-native plant growth on site.
