Students studying Environmental Science and Resource Management (ESRM) learn about natural and human-dominated landscapes and how to apply this knowledge to real-world problems. Sustainable Bioresource Systems Engineering (SBSE) students apply chemical sciences and engineering to manufacturing fiber product, fuels and chemicals from biomass resources. Special degree focus areas are available for ESRM students and degree minors are available in ecological restoration and ESRM.

Our graduate degrees offer a number of different paths that prepare students for careers from academia to public agencies, the private sector to nonprofit organizations. There are two traditional degrees and two non-thesis degrees. We also partner with other programs within the university to offer two concurrent degrees.
Graduate Degrees
Our faculty use engineering and natural, wildlife and social science in their work, which is aimed at developing renewable forest products and stewarding forest and landscape ecosystems for a range of functions and services, and understanding the social, economic and environmental consequences of stewardship and production choices.
In November, the College of the Environment announced the recipients of this year’s Collaborative Research in Earth System Science and Technology (CRESST) Type 1 and Type 2 awards, recognizing outstanding projects that advance innovative, interdisciplinary approaches to understanding our planet and environmental challenges.

This year marked the 100 year anniversary of the construction of the building and the SEFS community has had the opportunity to reflect on the building’s history and celebrate all that’s taken place within its walls over the last century – from the evolution of its programs, the celebration of its graduates and the research that has catapulted the school to the forefront of environmental and forest sciences.

We’re only a few months into the school year and there has been much to celebrate and reflect on. In the fall we launched a new major, the Sustainable Bioresource Systems Engineering major which is the next iteration of the BSE major.
