Here are a few of the recent projects we’ve heard about where SEFS Alumni are making an impact in communities near and far through their work.

Robert (Bob) L. Edmonds, Professor Emeritus, has written a book “Saving Forest Ecosystems: A Century Plus of Research and Education at the University of Washington.” It describes forestry education and research at UW from 1895 to 2018 in relation to the practice of forestry in Washington over the years. All proceeds from this book will be donated to SEFS student scholarships.

Korena Mafune, Washington Research Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow and National Geographic Explorer, is part of National Geographic’s new Tasting Wild show on Hulu (Episode 5, specifically). The program follows world-renowned chef Melissa King as she discovers flavors from wild places – like the Quinault temperate rainforest which she tours with Korena. You can get a taste of the show by watching the trailer here.

Mike Tulee [Yakama], Executive Director of the United Indians of All Tribes Foundation in Discovery Park, is highlighted in this recent news story about native activism, entitled, “A1 Revisited: Our coverage of 1970 protest showed neglect of vital Native issues.” Mike received his Ph.D. in the Vogt lab.
