This spring, Associate Professor Brian Harvey was named a Kavli Fellow by the National Academy of Sciences. The honor recognizes 87 of the nation’s brightest young scientists from industry, academia and government and invites them to take part in the Kavli Frontiers of Science symposia in 2025.

Harvey, who is the Jack Corkery and George Corkery Jr. Endowed Professor in Forest Sciences, participated in the U.S. symposium, which took place March 6-8 in Irvine, California. He was invited to speak about his research during a session on wildfire ecology and management, along with two other fellows. Harvey’s research combines field data, remote sensing, and simulation models to understand the drivers of forest fires and how fires affect forest ecosystems, and is regularly co-produced with partners to support forest management that adapts to a rapidly changing world.

Since it began in 1989, the National Academy of Sciences’ Frontiers of Science series has provided a forum for scientists to build contacts and networks that will assist as they progress in their careers. A committee of National Academy of Sciences members selected the 2025 fellows from a variety of disciplines. All have already made recognized contributions to science, including receiving major fellowships and awards.

Professor Harvey sat down with UW’s College of the Environment team to talk about his experiences at the symposium in March. Read the Q&A here.
