The aerial aftermath of the Norse Peak Wildfire in 2017.

Brian J. Harvey, assistant professor with the UW School of Environmental and Forest Sciences, provided expert input for a wildfire story by National Geographic and a photo essay published by the University of Washington.

The photo essay was created and published by UW photographer Mark Stone during the 2019 wildfire season. In addition to the photos, the essay looks at the work university faculty members and researchers are doing to understand wildfires and the ways they impact the lives of Pacific Northwesterners.

In National Geographicthe story Harvey was interviewed for focuses on how pests may impact the destruction of wildfires. He weighs in on whether bark beetles are to blame for wildfires that burn west of the Cascades. Read the story here.
