Master of Forest Resources (MFR) Forest Management Degree Admissions
Overview
The Master of Forest Resources (M.F.R.) – Forest Management degree is a coursework-based degree designed to integrate knowledge and skills from technical disciplines with those from policy and management in ways suitable for professional leadership in the public, non-governmental and private sectors; to create a collaborative and interdisciplinary learning environment that develops team approaches and leadership skills; and to present experiences needed for complex decision-making and create future managers capable of addressing the issues facing society and industry in the forest resources arena.
The M.F.R. program helps professionals who are seeking to obtain an advanced degree, and advanced training in their professions (or for a future profession) managing forest resources. This is a practical degree (vs. a degree based on becoming a research scientist) designed to assist in entry into the various professions that require forest management skills.
The degree program is accredited by the Society of American Foresters (SAF) and courses taken can be used to satisfy the educational requirements of the SAF’s Candidate Certified Forester (CCF) title.
Degree Time frame
Provided that the student has successfully completed a bachelor’s degree in forestry or a closely-related field prior to entering the M.F.R. program, with planning, it is possible for the degree to be completed in one calendar year. It is not uncommon however that students may take longer to complete all degree requirements plus a capstone project. Time to degree is very individual to each student and their progress regarding degree requirements, the capstone project they are working on, and their previous experience and preparation prior to entering the degree program.
If the incoming student has no prior forestry education but would otherwise be an excellent candidate for the program, they would be able to remedy this shortcoming by additional coursework here at SEFS. As a result of taking remedial courses, however, their time to graduation would likely be longer than 1 calendar year (as long as 1.5 to 2 years). Accepted applicants will be given specific feedback should they have education requirements that will need to be addressed in addition to the core coursework of the existing M.F.R. curriculum.

Test Scores and English Proficiency Requirements
Note: GRE Scores are not required for your SEFS application
English Proficiency for Non-Native English Speakers
SEFS follows the Graduate School’s English proficiency policies. Please read through this full section if you are a Non-Native English speaker.
General UW Admissions Language Proficiency Requirements
For general admissions requirements, see Graduate School Policy 3.2 Graduate School English Language Proficiency Requirements. This policy determines what is required for a student to be admitted to the UW and to SEFS.
For anyone required to submit English Proficiency scores, send your scores to UW as soon as possible.
Test scores will only attach to your application package once you have officially submitted it to UW/SEFS and paid the application fee. Do not wait for your English Proficiency test scores to show up as they will sit in a database on our end until you submit your application. Once your application is submitted, your official test scores will become part of your record to be considered.
Do make sure to order your scores well in advance if at all possible; details are below:
- If submitting official test scores, you must fill in the Self-Reported test scores as part of the application process. And you also need to send your Official Scores. SEFS requires both of these reports (self-reported, and official scores sent).
Language Requirements for Teaching Assistants
If you want to be able to apply for Teaching Assistantships immediately, or for us to be able to provide Teaching Assistantships as a funding assignment in your admissions package, you will need to qualify for Graduate School Policy 5.2: Conditions of Appointment for TAs who are not Native Speakers of English. Please note the following:
- Policy 5.2 requires a higher standard of spoken English than is required for general Admissions purposes – and is something you can qualify for in advance of matriculating, or after you are on campus.
- Many non-native English speakers will try hard to qualify at the Policy 5.2 level, even as an applicant. And a few, for various reasons may not be able to do that. For these individuals they will do the qualification after they have matriculated on campus.
