Here are a few of the recent projects we’ve heard about where SEFS Alumni are making an impact in communities near and far through their work.

Robert (Bob) L. Edmonds, Professor Emeritus, has written a book “Saving Forest Ecosystems: A Century Plus of Research and Education at the University of Washington.” It describes forestry education and research at UW from 1895 to 2018 in relation to the practice of forestry in Washington over the years. 

SEFS assistant professor co-author’s paper on nonlethal wolf management tactics

Gregory Bratman, SEFS Assistant Professor, named on the Highly Cited Researchers 2022 list

The University of Washington is proud to announce that 47 faculty and researchers who completed their work while at UW have been named on the annual Highly Cited Researchers 2022 list from Clarivate. 

SEFS Alum Featured in National Geographic’s Tasting Wild

Korena Mafune, Washington Research Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow and National Geographic Explorer, had the opportunity to be part of National Geographic’s new show, Tasting Wild. The program follows world-renowned chef Melissa King as she discovers flavors from wild places like the Quinault temperate rainforest.  

Permanent daylight-saving time would reduce deer-vehicle collisions, study shows

Laura Prugh, Associate Professor in the Environment and Forest Sciences, led a team of researchers that discovered daylight savings time changes have an impact on the amount of deer-vehicle collisions in the United States. 

Lessons in logs: The Mount Rainier Institute inspires a life-long love of science

For four days in September, a group of kids from Yakima’s Wilson Middle School set aside their daily lives and immerse themselves in outdoor science at the University of Washington’s Mount Rainier Pack Forest Institute – part of the School of Environmental and Forest Services. 

How UW is helping to build a maple syrup industry in Western Washington

Syrup producers, tapping into the natural sugar sap that runs through Pacific Northwest bigleaf maple trees, are hoping to make Washington’s product as well known and sought after as the state’s wines thanks to developing research and support from University of Washington scientists. 

SEFS students receive scholarships from the College of the Environment

The School of Environmental and Forest Sciences is pleased to announce that seven students have been awarded scholarship funding for the 2022-23 academic year from the College of the Environment. This includes five undergraduates and two graduate students.

We recently hosted our annual Salmon BBQ to a large crowd that was very happy to gather together! The weather was beautiful with the sun shining on some fall-colored trees. Everyone enjoyed some delicious salmon grilled in the courtyard as well as a joyful afternoon among friends and colleagues.
