SEFS Professor, Aaron Wirsing, and a team of collaborators at Florida International University have been studying young sharks who call Tetiaroa’s lagoon home until they venture out into open waters.

Congrats to Hema Velappan on winning the 2024 Husky Sustainability Award!
Hema has a history of creating, executing, and leading sustainability efforts on the UW Seattle campus. She co-founded the Institutional Climate Action (ICA) student group, along with five other students, which has been heavily involved in fossil fuel divestment and decarbonization efforts.

Each year the College of the Environment recognizes outstanding members of our College community via the College Awards and this year SEFS instructor, Robert Swan, was selected by Dean Tolstoy to receive the 2024 College of the Environment Exceptional Mentoring of Undergraduates Award.

A research paper released today in Science Advances details a conceptual framework designed to help us better understand the relationship between our nose, natural environments and overall human well-being. The research team was led by SEFS Assistant Professor Gregory Bratman who joined forces with Professor Peter Kahn and a group of experts from around the globe.

Andrea received her B.S. degree in Forestry/Land Use Planning in 1985.
Welcoming Dr. Gaj Sivandran to SEFS
Dr. Gaj Sivandran is an environmental engineer specializing in ecohydrology, sustainable development, and climate resilience. Holding a PhD from MIT and bachelor’s degrees from the University of Western Australia (referred to by Aussies as “U DUB”) in finance and environmental engineering, Gaj’s research focuses on integrating plant-water interactions into land surface models, studying contaminant fate and transport of nonpoint source pollution, and enhancing the climate resilience of water resources.
