UW School of Environmental and Forest Sciences Ph.D. student David Diaz recently authored an article on carbon neutrality and forest products for Western Forester, a publication of the Society of American Foresters. 

Study co-authored by SEFS Professor Moskal shows green roofs are effective at reducing runoff

A new study published in the Journal of Environmental Management and co-authored by School of Environmental and Forest Sciences Professor L. Monika Moskal found that the use of green roofs in the Pacific Northwest effectively manages and reduces stormwater runoff. 

Emeritus professor Franklin talks Northern Spotted Owl protections with Post Alley

As the Trump administration exited the White House, it gave one last “kick in the beak” to the Northern Spotted Owl, according to a Post Alley story.
The administration reduced the amount by nearly one-third of critical habitat protected for the owl in Washington, Oregon and California. 

SEFS emeritus professor publishes book on College of Forestry

A UW School of Environmental & Forest Sciences emeritus professor has published a new book that charts the history of the university’s College of Forestry, the predecessor of SEFS.
In “Saving Forest Ecosystems: A Century Plus of Research and Education at the University of Washington,” Robert Edmonds writes about the early days of logging to the days of preserving old-growth forests and the current era of climate change. 

SEFS to welcome Dr. Beronda L. Montgomery as 2021 Sustaining Our World Lecture speaker

UW’s School of Environmental and Forest Sciences is proud to welcome Dr. Beronda L. Montgomery as the 2021 Sustaining Our World Lecture speaker on April 14. She will present, “Lessons From Plants: Insights For Human Thriving.”
Montgomery is a writer, science communicator, and Michigan State University Foundation Professor in the Departments of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics.

Greetings on the new academic quarter and the New Year. We all have hopes for improvements in the pandemic over this year, though we also know that we will continue working mostly remotely through the current academic year. 

UW Botanic Gardens Director Fred Hoyt to retire in January

University of Washington Botanic Gardens (UWBG) Director Fred Hoyt will retire at the end of January.
Hoyt’s career at UWBG has spanned 38 years during which he has played an important role in many aspects of the stewardship and growth of its collections and programs. 

SEFS professor Wirsing’s research sheds light on how predators shape our world

For 20 years, UW School of Environmental and Forest Sciences professor Aaron Wirsing and colleagues studied predator behavior among a variety of species that has culminated in a recently published report in Ecology Letters.  

SEFS professor emeritus Tukey remembered for horticultural contributions

Dr. Harold Tukey, Jr., UW School of Environmental and Forest Sciences emeritus professor, founding director of the Center for Urban Horticulture and former director of the Washington Park Arboretum is being remembered for his horticultural contributions to the University, Seattle and beyond.
