Retired USFS employee, ESRM student set to graduate 31 years after enrolling
Brian Ahshapanek first enrolled at the School of Environmental Sciences in 1988. More than three decades later, he will graduate with a degree in Environmental Science and Resource Management (ESRM).
In the time between he started and finished his degree, Ahshapanek, a member of the Mukleshoot Tribe, worked for and retired from the U.S.
Student named one of two UW President’s Medal recipients
A School of Environmental and Forest Sciences student was named one of two University of Washington President’s Medalists.
Marisa Deluccia, an Environmental Science and Terrestrial Resource Management student, will be honored with the medal during the University’s Awards of Excellence ceremony on June 13 in Meany Hall.
SEFS researchers author study on balancing fisher conservation, prescribed burns
Three School of Environmental and Forest Science researchers have authored a study recently published in the journal Forest Ecology and Management about balancing fisher conservation and managing forests.
L. Monika Moskal, associate professor and associate director of SEFS; Van Kane, research assistant professor; and Jonathan Kane, staff researcher, contributed as authors to the study, “Forest structure predictive of fisher (Pekania pennanti) dens exists in recently burned forest in Yosemite, California, USA.”
The study looked at the difficulty land managers in the Sierra Nevada face in balancing conservation of the habitat of the fisher, a small mammal.
Laura Prugh featured on ‘The Show About Science’ podcast
School of Environmental and Forest Sciences associate professor Laura Prugh was recently featured on an episode of “The Show About Science,” a podcast hosted by Nate, a seven-year-old.
Dr. Prugh, who studies the dynamics of wildlife populations and communities, facilitation, trophic interactions and indirect effects, talked with Nate on the podcast’s 70th episode about mesopredators, apex predators and complex food webs.

Grad student Jenna Morris presents at ecology annual meeting
After receiving support from the UW School of Environmental and Forest Sciences (SEFS) Director’s Student Travel Fund, graduate student Jenna Morris was able to travel to and give an oral presentation at the 2019 annual meeting of the North American Regional Association of the International Association for Landscape Ecology (IALE-North America) on April 7-11 in Fort Collins, Colorado.
