Hi, I’m Deirdre Nelis! In Fall Quarter of 2024 I joined the Turnblom Lab, where we work on all things silviculture. I have not decided on a research topic yet, though it will be in the realm of silvicultural treatments in managed forest stands. I am dedicated to sustainability – both in terms of human populations and ecosystems, especially given the world of changing climate we live in due to fossil fuel emissions. I think one great way for humans to cut our carbon emissions, is by reverting back to using more timber in the building sector. At the same time, I am also a people person who wishes for everyone to experience the awe of bathing in a sustainable, diverse, and breathtaking mature-to-old-growth native forest ecosystem. Therefore, my overarching research desires include discovering the best forest management practices to achieve multi-objective forest management goals, particularly for timber yield, recreation, and habitat protection.
