SEFS provides numerous opportunities to participate in field experiences through course field trips, internships, volunteering, and other activities, and wants to ensure that students are able to participate without limitation due to lack of financial resources.

  • NOTE: The Student Field Experience Support Fund does not support Capstone research or research costs. For Capstone funding, and research funding requests, please apply through the Student Research Support Funds page.

Details

  • Requests are due by the fourth Monday of each quarter (Autumn, Winter, Spring). Requests for summer should be made in spring quarter. You can apply up to two quarters in advance of when the need is anticipated. Awards will be announced by the end of the quarter.
  • The SEFS Field Experience Support Fund provides up to $300 to support field experiences.
  • The funds support costs of course field trip fees (from the Hinckley Field Trip Fund), travel to field experience sites, and equipment or clothing necessary to participate in the experience.
  • NOTE: The Student Field Experience Support Fund does not support Capstone research or research requests in general. For Capstone funding, and research funding requests, please apply through the Student Research Support Funds page.
  • Requests will be reviewed by the SEFS Scholarship Committee, who will make recommendations for final funding decisions to the SEFS Director.
  • Awards will be credited to the student’s UW Student Account
  • A short thank you note to the fund donor is required.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be a declared ESRM or BSE major, or a SEFS graduate student, and be a full-time student in good academic standing (3.0 cumulative GPA last three academic quarters)
  • When applying for field trip fees, students must be enrolled an ESRM, BSE, or SEFS course that has field trip fees during the quarter that they apply (or the Summer if application is in Spring).
  • Students may receive funds once per 12-month period.

Criteria

  • Demonstration of financial need (indicate whether FAFSA or WASFA has been completed)
  • The funds will enable a meaningful field experience associate a learning or research objective.
  • Expenses not funded elsewhere (e.g., faculty research grant)

Allowable Expenses

  • Course fees for BSE, ESRM, SEFS courses (tuition is not considered a course fee)
  • Purchase or rental of equipment/gear needed for field experiences (boots, rain gear, etc.). Equipment can be purchased by the applicant, or money can be used to rent equipment as preferred/needed by the applicant
  • Travel to the field experience site (per diem: mileage, gas, lodging, food)

Unallowable Expenses

  • Tuition and books or textbooks
  • Stipends or wages to students or others
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Fees for field training courses (e.g. first aid, wilderness first aid)
  • Fees for study abroad programs
  • Travel to conferences
