Student Research Support Funds
SEFS has a limited amount of endowment funding to support unfunded student (undergraduate and graduate) research expenses. These funds are meant to supplement, not replace, existing research funding available from PIs in the School. To submit your request, please use this form.
Details
- Requests are due by the fourth Monday of each quarter (Autumn, Winter, Spring). Requests for summer should be made in Spring quarter. You can apply up to two quarters in advance of when the need is anticipated. Awards will be announced by the end of the quarter.
- Proposals may not exceed $500.
- Proposals will be reviewed by the SEFS Research Committee, who will make recommendations for final funding decisions to the SEFS Director.
- Awards will be credited to the student’s UW Student Account
- A short thank you note to the fund donor is required.
Eligibility
Undergraduate students:
- be a declared ESRM or BSE major
- be in good academic standing (3.0 cumulative GPA last 3 quarters)
- be enrolled in capstone research credits or other research credits
- a faculty mentor must be identified for the project
- students may receive funds once per 12-month period.
Graduate students:
- must be pursuing a SEFS graduate degree in good standing (having met applicable academic milestones)
- students may receive funds once per 12-month period.
Criteria
- merit of proposed project, including clarity of research question and methods, importance of expected results
- evidence that funds will have a discernible impact on the quality of the project
- letter from a member from the SEFS faculty
Allowable* Expenses
- Travel to research sites
- Purchase of datasets or applicable software
- Analytical costs
- Costs associated with conducting and analyzing surveys or interviews
- Costs associated with conducting field experiments and analyzing data
- Peer reviewed journal processing and publication costs
- Purchase or rental of research equipment. Personal items such as clothing, boots, or camping equipment should go through the Student Field Experience Support Fund.
